It was the middle of winter, I was on maternity leave with my third, and I was looking for an activity to do with my older kids. I love baking and wanted to make a cookie reminiscent of what I used to get in NYC: big and thick, crisp on the outside, gooey on the inside. I experimented until I found a recipe I loved. I posted the cookies on Instagram, with my son next to the mixer and my baby attached to me in a sling, and it got more attention than the birth of my kids. I passed some cookies out to friends, and everyone said I should sell them. That’s when the bakery was born.

The business grew quickly via Instagram - I was shocked. It’s very different from what I do in my day job. I’m a nurse practitioner and manage clinical trials at Yale. One of the skills that transfers from research to baking is my ability to synthesize information and execute on it. I have to read through protocols and quickly understand how to conduct a study. It’s the same with the bakery. I’ve had to research food photography, inventory, logistics... all aspects of running a business.

I'm now at a point where I’ve found a balance between my nursing career, bakery, and home life. It took me 6 months and a lot of soul-searching to be able to say that. My goal is to continue to grow my community engagement through the bakery. That’s been my favorite part. I do a lot with charities, collaborate with local businesses, and hope to do more pop-ups in the future.

I think you need to have a good foundation before venturing out to find your forte. Work on yourself first. Figure out what you like and don’t like, what kind of life you want, and who you need to be surrounded by to get there. Make sure you have the support you need. I’m able to do what I do because I have help.

I didn't invent the chocolate chip cookie - I just make a very good version of it. Many times, when someone is buying something, they’re buying into a brand, or into a person they relate to or trust. My cookies are delicious, but I think customers come back because they like what I’m doing, or the sprinkle of honest parenting humor. That’s the secret ingredient.
